Medical Informatics Expert Speaks at JMU

HARRISONBURG - Dr. Don Detmer, president and CEO of the American Medical Informatics Association, will discuss "The Present and Future of Biomedical and Health Informatics: AMIA's Initiatives," at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, April 3, in the Health and Human Services Building, Room 1302, at James Madison University. 

Biomedical and health care informatics is a field of research and practice that involves understanding and promoting clinical health care, health care literacy, personal health management, public health and medical records exchange and security, all with the objective of improving health. Detmer has been invited by JMU's Institute for Innovation in Health and Human Services and the Bio and Healthcare Informatics Center. 

Detmer is a professor of medical education in the department of public health sciences at the University of Virginia, and a visiting professor at the Center for Health Informatics and Multiprofessional Education, University College of London. He co-chairs the Blue Ridge Academic Health Group and chairs the board of MedBiquitous, an educational standard setting organization. He also serves on the Health Information Technology Council of Virginia.
