As higher education institutions emphasize high-impact practices in their courses and as programs and technology advances, Global Virtual Exchange (GVE also known as COIL) has become a popular approach to create intercultural and collaborative learning for participating students and instructors. While GVE has the potential to create problem based, transformative, and inexpensive learning experiences without traveling, instructors may benefit from support in planning, implementing, and evaluating these learning experiences to ensure they are meeting needs and having their intended impact.
This Madison Fellowship, co-facilitated with the Center for Global Engagement (CGE), will guide instructors who are interested in designing, implementing, and evaluating virtual exchanges in international and intercultural contexts.
Facilitators
- Shin Ji Kang, COE & CFI

- Defining the purpose of the GVE: develop objectives of the project/course, review of relevant literature and models, and develop research questions for a potential research project
- Designing the project: designing the curriculum & delivery, developing methodologies for a research study
- Determining the logistics of the project: identifying research/teaching partners, institutional support/challenges, IRB & resources
