Dwight M. Sours '97 '03 Memorial Endowed Scholarship

An endowed scholarship established by The Bachelor of Individualized Studies Alumni Chapter that provide the financial resources to support a scholarship endowment in memory of Dwight M. Sours, a double graduate of James Madison University who received his Bachelor of Individualized Studies degree in 1997 and his Master in Public Administration degree in 2003. He died on December 3, 2003. Through this scholarship endowment, funds will be provided annually to an outstanding undergraduate student scholar at James Madison University who meets certain requirements; specifically, a candidate for appointment as a Dwight M. Sours Memorial Scholar must: demonstrate superior academic ability and engage in community service in the student's local community or in the Shenandoah Valley.

Further, at the time of application for this scholarship, a candidate must be in good academic standing and must have: completed a minimum of 20 graded credit hours at James Madison University; attained a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.25 (on a 4.0 scale) for credits earned at James Madison University; declared the major of Individualized Study; and, enrolled in a program of study approved by the student's particular college or school.

Also, a candidates' need for financial assistance may be considered in the selection process, but doing so shall not be a mandatory criteria. Please note the appointment of students as Dwight M. Sours Memorial Scholars will be made each year in a manner determined at the discretion of the associate vice provost for the University's Office of Outreach & Engagement. If, in any particular year, there are no eligible students within the Bachelor of Individualized Studies program, then the Office of Outreach & Engagement shall advise the University's Office of Financial Aid & Scholarships of this situation so that it may award this scholarship in such a year to assist any undergraduate student at the University eligible to receive scholarship funds. Beyond the above provisions, the appointment of a student as a Dwight M. Sours Memorial Scholar shall follow the University's guidelines for the awarding of scholarships.
