June 2014 Board of Visitors Summary of Actions and Discussions

The James Madison University Board of Visitors met on Friday, June 6, 2014 at 1:30 p.m. in the Board Room of the JMU Festival Conference and Student Center.

The following is a summary of key areas of discussion at the board meeting:

  • Received the president’s report from Mr. Jonathan Alger during which the board was told:
    • U.S. House Historian Matt Wasniewski was the featured speaker at the May commencement exercises;
    • Admissions yield continues to be strong for the fall 2014 semester;
    • Governor Terry McAuliffe attended the ribbon cutting ceremony for the new Ice House facility downtown;
    • JMU has been included in the Princeton Review’s Guide to 332 Green Colleges: 2014 Edition;
    • The university has earned a silver level Governor’s Environmental Excellence Award for the East Campus Hillside Naturalization Project;
    • A team of JMU students finished second in the wind turbine category at the College Wind Competition sponsored by the Department of Energy;
    • JMU hosted American Wind Energy Association’s State Wind Energy Forum;
    • JMU will host a meeting of the State Council of Higher Education of Virginia on September 15-16, 2014; and
    • Many renovations and improvements are ongoing on campus.

The Board of Visitors took the following actions:

  • Approved the minutes of the April 11, 2014 meeting;
  • Approved revisions to the faculty handbook;
  • Approved the creation of an independent scholars major;
  • Approved a utility easement near the former WVPT building on Port Republic Road;
  • Approved tuition and fees for the 2014 – 2015 academic year:

  • Elected board officers for the 2014 – 2015 term. Mr. Mike Thomas has been elected to serve as rector and Ms. Carly Fiorina has been elected to serve as the board’s vice-rector. Ms. Donna Harper, vice president for Access and Enrollment Management, will serve as secretary.
  • Approved the following real estate purchases:
    • 2868 South Main Street for $4.3 million.
