2010 May Award Hinshaw Grundmann Dr. M. Joseph Hinshaw (Associate Professor, Media Arts and Design) and Michael Grundmann (Assistant Professor, Media Arts and Design) have won four national awards for "Geometry Rules," a 15-minute educational video that illustrates the uses of geometry in the workplace and in games and sports. Designed for middle-school students, the video won the Best of Competition (faculty videos, educational/instructional) in the Broadcast Education Association's Festival of Media Arts, a Telly bronze award, an Aegis Award and an Award of Excellence from the Videographers Awards. 05
2010 May Award Hinshaw Dr. M. Joseph Hinshaw (Associate Professor, Media Arts and Design) and Ron Osgood of Indiana University won an Award of Excellence from the Videographer Awards in the interactive/DVD category for the DVD that accompanies their textbook, "Visual Storytelling: Videography and Post Production in the Digital Age." 05
2010 May Exhibition Maune Dietrich Maune (Associate Dean, College of Arts and Letters; Professor, Media Arts and Design) exhibited two paintings, "I Remember South Dakota" and "Sheep, Cape St. Mary's," in the exhibit "The Paul Hartley Legacy" at the Lee Hansley Gallery in Raleigh, N.C., in January and February and at the Greenville Museum of Art in North Carolina in March and April. Maune is one of about 100 of Hartley's former students selected by a committee for the exhibition honoring his late mentor. Maune's painting, "The Red House, Monhegan Island," was selected and purchased by The Ambiance Group, a fine art consulting firm in Nashville, for the permanent collection of the new Rockingham Memorial Hospital. 05
2010 May Grant Downey Dr. Daniel M. Downey (Professor, Chemistry) received $10,000 from the U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service to continue inventorying water quality of forest streams and monitor the effects on stream water chemistry. 05
2010 May Grant Geier Dr. Clarence R. Geier (Professor, Anthropology) received $110,000 from Carmeuse Lime & Stone to conduct a Phase I historical archaeological program that will result in the location, description and preliminary assessment of those prehistoric and historic sites lying within the project area. 05
2010 May Grant Geier Courtier Dr. Clarence R. Geier (Professor, Anthropology) and Dr. Anna M. Courtier (Assistant Professor, Geology and Environmental Science) received $1,083 from the Shenandoah Valley Battlefields Foundation to review historic and archaeological data that will be used to provide a context for the interpretation of prehistoric and historic cultural remains identified on the Ramseur's Hill Parcel. 05
2010 May Grant Hartzler-Weakley Kimberlee Hartzler-Weakley (Administrator, Institute for Innovation in Health and Human Services) received $7,286 from the Office on Children and Youth to support the Teen Pregnancy Prevention Program. 05
2010 May Grant Jenkins Chelsea L. Jenkins (Executive Director, Virginia Clean Cities) received $710,000 from the Environmental Protection Agency to improve air quality through the replacement of school buses and construction equipment engines and to increase the efficiency of school buses through combining idle reduction technology and low rolling resistance tires. 05
2010 May Grant Tongen Taalman Warne Dr. Anthony L. Tongen (Associate Professor, Mathematics), Dr. Laura A. Taalman (Associate Professor, Mathematics) and Dr. Paul G. Warne (Associate Professor, Mathematics) received $27,499 from the Mathematical Association of America to continue the M3 summer program to foster mathematical development and personal mentorship. 05
2010 May Honor Dobransky Dr. Kerry Dobransky (Assistant Professor, Sociology and Anthropology) received the American Sociological Association's 2010 Roberta G. Simmons Outstanding Dissertation in Medical Sociology Award. 05
2010 May Presentation Anderson Dr. Steven D. Anderson (Director and Professor, Media Arts and Design) presented on two panels, "Developing Websites with Content Management Systems: Helping Students Help Clients" and "Collaboration and Learning via Social Media in Study Abroad," at the Broadcast Education Association Convention in Las Vegas in April. 05
2010 May Presentation Greene Rustin P. Greene (Professor, Media Arts and Design) presented on two panels, "You Can't Shoot a Dream, You Can Only Shoot a Story: A Producer's View of Documentary Scripts" and "The Photoboard: Storyboarding Without a Pencil," at the 2010 Broadcast Education Association Convention in April. 05
2010 May Presentation Guiniven Dr. John E. Guiniven (Associate Professor, Media Arts and Design) presented "The Effectiveness and Ethics of Cause-Marketing: A Front-Burner Issue" at the International Public Relations Research Conference in Miami in April. Guiniven presented "Accessorize for America: The Role of PR in Creating the Consumer Nations and the Ethical Implications Going Forward" to the Public Relations Council of the Shenandoah Valley, Oct. 27, 2009. 05
2010 May Presentation McHardy Thomas J. McHardy (Associate Professor, Media Arts and Design) presented "Teaching on the Road: Film Studies in a Summer Abroad Program" at the 2009 University Film and Video Association Conference in New Orleans. McHardy also exhibited an interactive guide to the Z1U camera, a tutorial he is developing for one of his courses. 05
2010 May Presentation O Conner Thomas O. O'Connor (Associate Professor, Media Arts and Design) presented "Graham Greene: Culture and Contradiction" at the International Conference on the Arts in Society in Venice, Italy, in July 2009. 05
2010 May Presentation Wendelken Dr. David H. Wendelken (Associate Professor, Media Arts and Design) led a panel on "Blogging as a Classroom Teaching Tool" at the National Convention of the College Media Advisers in New York City. 05
2010 May Publication Flamiano Dr. Dolores L. Flamiano (Associate Professor, Media Arts and Design) wrote an article, "Heroes of Hell Hole Swamp," which was published in Southern Cultures, an interdisciplinary journal published by the Center for the Study of the American South at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Flamiano also wrote "Japanese American Internment in Popular Magazines: Race, Citizenship and Gender in World War II Photojournalism" for Journalism History. 05
2010 May Publication Greene Rustin P. Greene (Professor, Media Arts and Design) wrote an article, "Can Student Screenwriters Provide Valuable Criticism to Their Peers? Yes Maybe," which was published in the Journal of Media Education, January 2010. Greene also produced "JMU's Semester in Florence: Living The Dream," a promotional video for JMU's Office of International Programs. 05
2010 May Publication Guiniven Dr. John E. Guiniven (Associate Professor, Media Arts and Design) wrote an article, "Good, Bad — and Does it Matter? An American Professor Evaluates Ukraine's Image in the U.S.A.," which was published in Willard Marketing Monthly, Kyiv, Ukraine, September 2009. Guiniven also wrote "Supreme Court Expansion of First Amendment Freedoms is No Gift to PR Practitioners," which was published in The Public Relations Strategist, Spring 2010. 05

The book was published by Edward Elgar Publishing: Cheltenham, United Kingdom, and Northampton, Mass., and was simultaneously released in hardback and paperback. 05
2010 May Publication Wendelken Dr. David H. Wendelken (Associate Professor, Media Arts and Design) had one of the images from his photo blog on birds and butterflies selected for inclusion in Cornell University's encyclopedia, "Birds of North America Online," and another featured in an exhibition at the visitor's center at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and at some National Wildlife Refuges. 05
2010 May Publication Whitmeyer Nicoletti Dr. Steven N. Whitmeyer (Assistant Professor, Geology and Environmental Science) and Jeremy Nicoletti (student) wrote an article, "The digital revolution in geologic mapping," for the GSA Today, a publication of the Geological Society of America. The article appeared in the April/May 2010 issue. 05
