2010 August Grant Critzer Penelope Critzer (Director, Shenandoah Valley Child Development Clinic)received $310,000 from the Virginia Department of Health for clinic funding in fiscal year 2011. 08
2010 August Grant Foucar-Szocki Dr. Diane L. Foucar-Szocki (Head, Learning, Technology and Leadership Education; Professor, Adult Education/Human Resource Development) received $150,000 from the Virginia Department of Education for the Career Development Academy to offer English literacy civics services to area immigrants and refugees for their achievement of English language proficiency and civic understanding. Foucar-Szocki received $200,000 from the Virginia Department of Education to establish a Community Learning Center at Skyline Middle School. She received $200,000 from the Virginia Department of Education to establish the Smithland Community Learning Center, linking the Big Brothers Big Sisters AMP IT UP Academic Mentoring program and the Career Development Academy Adult and Family Learning Center for quality out-of-school, extended day programming. 08
2010 August Grant Griscom Dr. Heather P. Griscom (Assistant Professor, Biology) received $10,000 from the U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service for "Predicting the future forest underneath a dying eastern hemlock (Tsuga canadensis) stand in a headwater ecosystem: Implications for native brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) populations" to address the question of how the die-off of a hemlock stand and the resulting regenerating forest in a headwater system will affect water temperature and brook trout populations. 08
2010 August Grant Halling Dr. Dan C. Halling (Associate Professor, Communication Sciences and Disorders) received $12,000 from the Virginia School for the Deaf and Blind for a graduate assistantship from the audiology program. 08
2010 August Grant Kolvoord Dr. Robert A. Kolvoord (Professor, Integrated Science and Technology) received $499,995 from the National Science Foundation for "Bridging the Valley: A STEP Ahead for STEM Majors" to design and conduct an impact evaluation plan to collect data, track progress and evaluate student outcomes. Kolvoord received $5,000 from Fairfax County Public Schools for a K-12 GIS Software Site License Consortium. 08
2010 August Grant Maslen Nash Dr. Eric H. Maslen (Head and Professor, Integrated Science and Technology) and Dr. Carole L. Nash (Instructor, Integrated Science Technology) received two awards of $46,500 and $25,000 from the National Park Service for the cataloging and analysis of archeological artifacts. 08
2010 August Grant McCabe Conaty-Buck Jennifer A. McCabe (Assistant Director and Associate Professor, East Campus Library Services) and Susan Conaty-Buck (Instructor, Nursing) received $38,595 from the National Network of Libraries of Medicine for "Using Informatics to Bridge the Gap in Health Literacy" to develop "talking" touch screen health information kiosks to improve access for adults with low health literacy in Harrisonburg and Rockingham County. 08
2010 August Grant Moran Dr. Thomas E. Moran (Assistant Professor, Kinesiology) received $14,988 from Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania for "Overcoming the Barriers" to provide individualized programming and/or instructional support to empower individuals who have disabilities with the "tools" they need to successfully participate in community-based recreational programs. 08
2010 August Grant Noftsinger Newbold Dr. John B. Noftsinger (Vice Provost for Research and Public Service; Professor, Integrated Science and Technology) and Kenneth F. Newbold (Director of Research Development, Research and Public Service) received $750,000 from the U.S. Department of Energy for "Shenandoah Valley as a National Demonstration Project Achieving 25 Percent Renewable Energy by the Year 2025" to provide a path forward for Virginia to be the national model in energy implementation as JMU establishes a framework for reaching 25 percent renewable energy before 2025. 08
2010 August Grant Parker Dr. G. Edgar Parker (Professor, Mathematics and Statistics) received $2,404 from the Educational Advancement Foundation for the study of a Moore Method course in analysis to provide useful video packages for enhancement of the video sessions for Moore method seminars and to increase the database from which Moore method can be studied as a viable pedagogy. 08
2010 August Grant Race Gary S. Race (Fiscal Technician, Institute for Innovation in Health and Human Services) received $18,024 from the Virginia Department of Health for a home visiting consortium. Race received $59,000 from the Virginia Department of Health for the provision of training for public health response to sexual and domestic violence to schedule/coordinate and provide training sessions for family planning clinic nurses and home visitors. 08
2010 August Grant Zullo Dr. Robert H. Zullo (Assistant Professor, Kinesiology) received $16,804 from Travel, Events and Management in Sports for support of the TEAMS 2009 Conference to forge a relationship between TEAMS 2009 and the JMU Sports and Recreation Management graduate program and undergraduate programs. 08
2010 August Honor Dobransky Dr. Kerry Dobransky (Assistant Professor, Sociology) was awarded the 2010 Award for Best Dissertation in Mental Health from the Section on the Sociology of Mental Health of the American Sociological Association and the 2010 Roberta G. Simmons Outstanding Dissertation Prize from the Medical Sociology Section of the American Sociological Association. 08
