This map is Exploration and Settlement 1675-1800 from the U.S. National Atlas, 1970. The shading shows settled areas. The primary U.S. settlement across the mountains is west of what is now West Virginia and south of the Ohio River in Kentucky. The Ohio Valley north of the River was yet not settled.
