The Department of English, Department of Foreign Languages, Literatures, and Cultures, Department of History, Department of Philosophy and Religion, and the Department of Sociology and Anthropology make up the School of Liberal Arts.

English- Joe Maddrey (JMU, English 2001), author of Nightmares in Red, White, and Blue: The Evolution of the American Horror Film (McFarland, 2004), has recently published The Making of T.S. Eliot: A Study of the Literary Influences (McFarland, 2009). His documentary, produced with Andrew Monument and based on Maddrey’s first book, Nightmares in Red, White, and Blue recently premiered at the Deauville Festival of American Cinema, in Deauville, France, along with such films as Julie & Julia.
