From: Media Resources

Regular users of Media Resources Equipment Loans services know that this past Fall semester, their office had to relocate to Carrier Library from Spotwood Hall for an indefinite period.

It has become apparent in the past few years that suitable permanent quarters outside of Spotswood Hall or Carrier Library could not be secured on west campus, where a majority of Equipment Loans' business with users is conducted. Furthermore, its separation from Tech Classroom support services means that while occasional-loan business continues to decline over time, the cost of adequate staff coverage only increases.

Therefore we have decided, with the support of Academic Affairs, to scale back the services offered by Equipment Loans and to integrate them physically within the Media Center in Carrier Library.

These changes in equipment service will occur during a phase-out period over May and summer, while construction in the Media Center creates the support space needed.

Equipment Loans--operating out of the Media Center circulation desk--will continue these services:

  • Tech Classroom service call routing
  • West campus Tech Classroom key distribution
  • An inventory of portable data/video projectors and laptop computers (for faculty and staff use)
  • An expanded inventory of digital recording devices: camcorders, still cameras, audio recorders and accessories (for the whole JMU community)
  • Potentially new inventory of other high-use, portable digital technology as suggested by the changing needs of our academic user community

Over time we expect this high-use inventory to serve better the needs of students, as well as to continue serving faculty and staff as before. The Media Center may also add video and audio transfer equipment, and staff guidance in its use.

The reconfigured Equipment Loans will discontinue the following services:

  • inventory of older "audiovisual" equipment, including: slide projectors, 16mm film projectors, overhead transparency projectors, portable public address systems, screens, and the like. (But please see the next paragraph before becoming too concerned!)
  • all equipment delivery services. Equipment will need to be picked up and returned to the Media Center in Carrier Library. (Use of the JMU Libraries' delivery service for library materials is unfortunately not a viable option for equipment loans, which present different use patterns and challenges.)
  • support for campus events, rather than classes, will be primarily staff-centered and coordinated through Events and Conferences in most cases. (The routine exceptions are equipment setup and operation for graduations, Choices events, and non-class activities occurring in Memorial Hall facilities during weekdays.)

However, most of the older Equipment Loans inventory being discontinued will be offered to academic departments and offices that still use these items on occasion. EL staff will be contacting our primary users of this equipment during the next few weeks in order to effect inventory transfers where desirable.

In addition to transferring older audiovisual equipment, Media Resources plans to serve a consultative role afterward. We can provide public information regarding where distributed inventory is still available for occasional use by others, and we'll also be ready to provide purchasing information for those offices who want to buy their own equipment instead.

The refocused and integrated Equipment Loans services should be completed by the start of Fall 2007. We will be glad to work with our regular users over this summer to ease the transition where we can.

Please feel free to call with any questions you may have in the meantime. Either the EL supervisor, Cindy Minter (8-6802; minterck@jmu.edu), or Jeff Clark (8-6770; clarkjc@jmu.edu) will be glad to provide assistance.
