Prizes: Any prizes valued at $25 or more are subject to State and FICA taxes.
Employees who win door prizes will see an increase in the amount of FICA tax withheld and VA State tax withheld in their June 12, 2009, paycheck. JMU is required to withhold FICA tax and VA State tax from the paycheck of the prize winner. JMU is only required to report the increased Federal Taxable amount and not actually withhold the Federal Tax.
The prizes will be available for pick up in the Alumnae Hall at which time employees can determine whether they want to keep the prize and will pay the tax or not. If an employee wins the prize, but does not want to accept it or pay the tax, they will have the option to sign a form declining the prize. Upon acceptance of a prize valued over $25, the employee will need to sign a form stating that they understand they will have taxes withheld on a stated prize value. Once this form is signed by the employee, it will be forwarded to the Payroll office for processing.
If you do not wish to be on the list for prize eligibility, please e-mail jmuad@jmu.edu
