In August of 2008, JMU Information Technology started a wireless test pilot project that would allow wireless connectivity without the need for VPN client software. Currently, there are two wireless options: JMU-Official-Wireless and JMU-Pilot-Wireless. JMU-Official-Wireless requires the use of a VPN client, while JMU-Pilot-Wireless uses security built into modern operating systems. We encourage everyone to start using JMU-Pilot-Wireless.
In the summer of 2009, JMU IT will change the network name for JMU-Pilot-Wireless to JMU-Official-Wireless and the legacy VPN service to VPN Wireless. Instructions for the JMU-Pilot-Wireless can be found at: http://www.jmu.edu/computing/desktop/wireless/#pilot
