About Our Program

We appreciate your interest in the Athletic Training Education Program (ATEP) at James Madison University (JMU). If you are a potential student, we hope you will give our program strong consideration. Athletic Training is a major within the Department of Health Sciences. A dedicated student can complete the Athletic Training Curriculum in four years, however, completing a second major or meeting prerequisites for a pre-professional allied health program may require additional semesters and/or summer school.

The ATEP at JMU is a highly competitive and selective program whereby a limited number of students (approximately 12-18) are admitted annually. Meeting the criteria for application does not guarantee admission into the program, however, if you maintain solid grades (B/B- or better) and complete all of the pre-requisites, you have an excellent chance of being admitted to the program. We select students based on academic achievement, successful completion of the pre-professional phase (including the observation/volunteer experience), appropriate completion of all application requirements, written and oral communication throughout the pre-professional phase and application process, and your performance during the structured admissions interview.

Most students apply to the ATEP in the spring of the sophomore year, beginning the professional phase of the program with an orientation and clinical work in August prior to the traditional junior year. (See Clinical Requirements for more information). The curriculum phase of the program requires both academic coursework and clinical hours. A minimum of 800 hours spread equally over at least two years is required for graduation. Students graduating from the ATEP at JMU meet all of the requirements to sit for the Board of Certification (BOC) national certification examination.

If you are interested in JMU's ATEP or want more information on our program, we invite you to visit the many links provided on our website. In addition, please feel free to contact any member of the JMU athletic training faculty/staff if you have further questions. We wish you the best as you pursue plans for your college career. We hope those plans include JMU.
