What is Green Dot?

JMU utilizes Green Dot, an evidence-based comprehensive strategy, to prevent power-based personal violence (sexual violence, dating violence and stalking) in our community. The foundation of Green Dot is community mobilization involving faculty, staff and students as partners in prevention.

We know that far too many people are being hurt by power-based personal violence. If we’re truly going to reduce the number of people being hurt, we have to change our culture.

Green Dot trainings are proactive and include skill-based learning that encourage all members of our community to do their part to prevent harm.

No one has to do everything, but everyone has to do something.”

3 D's

Green Dot is built on reactive and proactive actions that can stop harm from occurring. Reactive actions include utilizing the 3 D’s to intervene:

  • Direct– Do something yourself such as asking someone to stop what they are doing, or check on someone you may be worried about.
  • Distract– Think of a distraction that will defuse the situation or calm things down in the moment. A distraction could be starting an unrelated conversation or asking someone to borrow their phone. You are only limited by your own imagination when it comes to creating a distraction.
  • Delegate– Ask someone else to get involved such as the friends of the person you are worried about, a faculty or staff member, or a trusted peer.
