The Gandhi Center currently has two
established lecture series:
Tolstoy Lecture Series in
Global Nonviolence
The Tolstoy Lecture Series in Global
Nonviolence has been established to celebrate the life and legacy
of Leo Tolstoy. Count Lev Nikolayevich Tolstoy (1828 - 1910) was a
Russian novelist, social reformer, pacifist, Christian anarchist,
vegetarian, and moral thinker. As a moral philosopher, Tolstoy was
notable for his ideas on nonviolent resistance through his work
The Kingdom of God is Within You (1893), which in turn influenced Mahatma Gandhi.
The Tolstoy Lecture Series brings
distinguished scholars and practitioners of nonviolence to the
James Madison University campus for public lectures, seminars,
panel discussions, and a variety of related interactions with
faculty, students, and the community at large.

Lecture Series in Religious
Traditions
The Lecture Series in Religious
Traditions brings distinguished scholars to the James Madison
University campus for public lectures. The aim is to establish a
group of annual lecture series in religious traditions. Each series
will focus on a different faith tradition; as a group, they will
encourage cross-civilizational dialogue. At present the Gandhi
Center sponsors a series in Christianity and Hinduism.
