We're glad you're interested!

Our ISAT203 Viral Discovery course is open to all undergraduate students. You'll take a deep-dive into scientific inquiry where you will isolate, name, and study a virus that kills bacteria that can also be used in place of antibiotics.

You don't have to be a science major to discover something brand new!

Skills
  • Critical Thinking Skills. Through experimental design, data analysis and interpretation, and the applications of mathematics in problem-solving.
  • Scientific Skills and Techniques. Learn about aseptic technique, microbiology, molecular biology, genetics, microscopy, as well as DNA sequencing, genome annotation, and comparative and functional genomics.
  • Effective Communication and Professional Development Opportunities. Present your research findings, network with others in the scientific community, co-author submission to genome databases and peer-reviewed publications.

As a student in our Viral Discovery course, you'll gain hands-on research experience. National studies show that students who participate in the course make better grades in other science classes.

“The hands on experience allowed me to learn techniques that I will use in my future research. The Viral Discovery course also provided the foundation for me to learn how to learn more efficiently and effectively and look at problems through multiple fields of thought.” -Rachel Carson (’18)

Careers

Many students who take the Viral Discovery course have chosen to stay in a STEM field and have gone on to become a
