Scholarship History:

Established with a grant from the Lettie Pate Whitehead Foundation Inc. to award scholarships to nursing majors from nine southern states. This is an annual scholarship.  Please check with the department on availability.

Scholarship History:

Established by the College of Nursing Alumni Association Steering Committee in January 1989.  Dr. Dake helped establish the School of Nursing here, complete with National League of Nursing accreditation.  She has always been active in nursing issues at the state level.  In the early 1980s she became a member of the steering committee for the Virginia Society for Professional Nurses.  She helped write the by laws and served as treasurer.  Later she was the first chairwoman of the Alliance of Nursing Organization Specialties.  She also worked with the USPN and the Virginia Association of Colleges of Nursing in recruitment efforts for state nursing schools.  She retired in 1988. 

 

 

 

Gloria Jane Hollowell Henley Scholarship

Scholarship History:

Established in February 1983.  Gloria was the mother of John D. Henley '85, who graduated from JMU with a degree in Management Information Systems. Gloria was born July 27, 1936 in Norfolk, Virginia.  During her childhood and teen years she was a camp counselor, a Brownie and Girl Scout, and an enthusiastic member of Knox Presbyterian Church.  She played piano for 8 years and also worked part-time at Smith & Welton Department Store.  She graduated from Maury High School in Norfolk. As a juvenile diabetic, Gloria suffered from a number of complications.  She had several amputations, was on a kidney machine, and eventually died of heart failure on July 11, 1982, just short of her 46th birthday.

 

 

 

Mary R. Waples Nursing Scholarship

Scholarship History:

Established by the nursing department of James Madison University in 1980.  This was the first year of the four-year program here.  It had previously been a three-year program at Rockingham Memorial Hospital. Mary Robertson Waples was born June 2, 1896 in Onancock, Virginia.  She attended Woman's College in Richmond and was a 1921 graduate of the Johnston-Willis School of Nursing.  She came to the Harrisonburg Normal School in 1923, where she was in charge of the infirmary and taught in the home economics department. In 1944 she left her position as head nurse at Madison College to become a field service worker for the American Red Cross.  She prepared Red Cross instructions in home health and nursing home care for mothers and babies.  She also worked throughout the United States when disasters struck. She was a member of the Harrisonburg-Rockingham Speakers Bureau, president of the Advisory Council at Rockingham Memorial School of Nursing, and served as president on the area council of the American Association of Retired Persons.  She died June 27, 1993 at the age of 97.

Scholarship History:

Established by Francis X. Farrell ’82 and Mary Carter Farrell ’84 to support undergraduate students whose chosen field of study and research is nursing, a major discipline in the College of Integrated Science & Technology. The gift creating this scholarship is made to commemorate their lifetime service to others in need. In each academic year, there will be one outstanding undergraduate student designated as the Farrell Scholar.
