Established by Dr. Z. S. Dickerson Jr. and his wife, Mildred. Dr. Dickerson was the associate dean of the College of Education and Human Services here, and Mrs. Dickerson was a professor of education. Dr. Dickerson was first in charge of Madison College's business department, which was primarily a secretarial program, and he was responsible for the department's graduate program. As head of business education, data processing and administrative services, he developed the Center for Vocational Education. He received a commendation from the Board of Visitors in 1976, one of only two commendations ever given by the board. Mrs. Dickerson began her career here as a nursery school teacher at Anthony-Seegar Campus School. She became coordinator of Madison's early childhood education program in 1967 and received a grant to develop one of two graduate degrees authorized by the state. She also initiated one of the state's first undergraduate programs in the field. She coordinated the program until 1982, when she returned to full-time teaching. The Dickerson retired in 1986. |
