Scholarship History:

The Bruce/Crawford/Morrison/Rummel Scholarship was established by the JMU Faculty Women's Caucus in honor of Dr. Patricia "Pat" Bruce, Dr. Marilyn Crawford, Dr. L. Leotus "Lee" Morrison, and Dr. Rose Mary Rummel in December 1990. Dr. Bruce joined the faculty of Madison College in physical & health education in 1961. Dr. Morrison also taught health and physical education, and was inducted into the JMU Sports Hall of Fame in 1992. Drs. Bruce and Morrison are now retired.  Dr. Crawford She joined the faculty of Madison College in 1958 as an assistant professor of physical and health education.  She was appointed the head of the department of physical and health education in 1966.  During her time here she served as the director of intercollegiate athletics, director of intramurals, women's basketball coach; and head of archery, golf, softball, gymnastics and basketball.  She died in 1989.  Dr. Rummel joined the faculty of Madison College in 1965.  While here she was the coordinator of the motor performance laboratory and coordinator of grants and research for the department. She died in 1991.

Scholarship History:

Established by Thomas W. Bilello and Nancy Mayer in memory of their son, Thomas W. Bilello '87, in December 1998.  Tom Bilello was a political science major who was very interested in athletics administration.  He died unexpectedly of a heart condition in November 1998.  Tom was passionate about his friends and family, his career in athletic administration and JMU.

 

 

Marilyn Crawford Kinesiology Graduate Scholarship

Scholarship History:

Established by Charlotte C. Arrendell in September 1998 in memory of her sister, Dr. Marilyn Crawford, a former member of the kinesiology faculty here.  Dr. Crawford was the head of the department of Physical Education and Health Sciences here for 23 years and retired in 1989.  She earned her B.S. from the Women's College in Greensboro, N.C.; her Master's at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and her Ph.D. at the University of Texas.  She was very involved in public service: The Virginia and Shenandoah Lung Association, the Virginia Heart Association, the Shenandoah Valley Mental Health Association, and the Virginia Division of the American Cancer Society.  Marilyn was a strong believer in education, and she consistently gave students money to help them with their expenses.  She gave generously and did not expect students to repay her.  Charlotte felt that a graduate scholarship was a fitting tribute to Marilyn's dedication and generosity.  Dr. Crawford died in September 1989.

Scholarship History:

Established by Dr. Caroline Sinclair, former member of the physical education department and department chairperson from 1950 to 1966. She died in February 1996.
