Scholarship History: |
An honors program scholarship established by William E. "Ed" Bridgeforth, Jr. in November, 1991 in honor of Dr. Carrier's 20th year as president of this institution. Ed Bridgeforth was born in Charlottesville, Virginia on February 26, 1931. In 1949 he graduated from Handley High School in Winchester, Virginia. He attended the University of Miami at Coral Gables, graduating with a BBA in economics in 1954. He served in the U.S. Army in Korea from 1955 - 1956. After that, he worked for the Royal Crown Bottling Company of Hagerstown and Winchester, eventually becoming president and C.E.O. He was a member of the JMU Foundation Board from 1980-1982, and was appointed to the JMU Board of Visitors in 1982, serving until 1990. He and his wife, Ruth, had five children, four of whom graduated from JMU. They also co-chaired the JMU Art Auction in 1992. Bridgeforth Stadium is named for Ed Bridgeforth and his contributions to the university. He died January 28, 1993. |

An honors program scholarship established in April, 1991 in honor of Dr. Carrier's 20th year as president of this institution by Donald and Frances Litten. Donald Litten was born in New Market, Virginia. He attended Madison College from 1950 to 1952, and he was admitted to the Virginia bar in 1957. He served on the JMU Board of Visitors from 1981-84. He was elected chairman of the Valley Regional Advisory Board of First American Bank of Virginia and has been on the board of Valley National Bank and First American's regional board. Frances Litten graduated from Madison College in 1949 with a degree in home economics. |

He graduated from Virginia Union University in 1963 and earned his law degree from North Carolina Central University in 1967. He is a judge for the Commonwealth of Virginia. He served on the JMU Board of Visitors from 1982-85. |

Scholarship History: |
An honors program scholarship established in April, 1991 in honor of Dr. Carrier's 20th year as president of this institution by Wallace L. and Juanita Chandler. Mr. Chandler graduated from Elon College in North Carolina in 1949 and earned a law degree from the Univ. of Richmond in 1952. At 17, after one year of college, he joined the Army, attended Officers' Candidate School, served overseas and was honorably discharged as a 1st lieutenant. He joined Universal Leaf Tobacco Company in Richmond in 1950. He became Sr. V.P. in 1974, Executive Vice President in 1982, and Chief Administrative Officer after that. He has served on the JMU Board of Visitors, serving as Rector from 1972 - 74. He has been a member of the board of trustees at Elon College and is the former director and officer of Elon College General Alumni Assoc. He received the Distinguished Service Award from James Madison University in 1973. Chandler Hall is named for him. His wife, Juanita 'Nita' Chandler, graduated from Madison College in 1948. She is from South Boston, VA. The Chandlers have three daughters, two of whom are JMU graduates. |

An honors program scholarship established in April, 1991 in honor of Dr. Carrier's 20th year as president of this institution by Lewis and Ethel Strite. Ethel Showalter Strite graduated from Madison College in 1946 with a B.S. in home economics. She taught home economics for several years and now works and travels extensively with her husband in his work and business-related affairs. Lewis Strite was the president of Shenandoah Manufacturing Company, a light steel fabricating plant whose products include poultry and livestock raising equipment, pathological incinerators for farms and hospitals and wood burning heaters. He started there as a salesman. He and Ethel are very active with the Mennonite Church. Mr. Strite is a past president of the Harrisonburg Rotary Club, a former member of the Board of Directors of the Rockingham Memorial Hospital, and a former member of the board of the JMU Foundation, Inc. |

An honors program scholarship established in May, 1991 in honor of Dr. Carrier's 20th year as president of this institution by Ralph and Inez Roop. Inez Graybeal graduated from the State Teachers College at Harrisonburg with a double major in English and History. She was a schoolteacher in Virginia for many years. Inez's involvement with James Madison University has been lifelong. She has served on the Alumni Board of Directors, the Board of Visitors, and was a recipient of the Distinguished Alumni Service Award. Ralph Roop is a graduate of the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University and is a retired businessman. The Roop Scholarship is just one of the many ways Inez and Ralph have shown their commitment to the mission of JMU and its students. Roop Hall is named for them. |

William Harris graduated from the College of William and Mary in 1963. He earned an M.B.A. at Old Dominion University in 1968. He worked for Crestar Bank for many years, eventually becoming President of the Great Washington Region of Crestar Bank. He was a member of the JMU Board of Visitors and the JMU Foundation Inc. Board of Directors. Mr. Harris is deceased. |

An honors program established in June, 1991 in honor of Dr. Carrier's 20th year as president of this institution by Paul and Ruth Chiapparone. Paul Chiapparone graduated from Adelphi University in New York with a B.B.A. He was in the Army from 1962-64 and worked as a product manager for the typesetting system for Time, Inc. from 1964-66. In 1966 he joined Electronic Data Systems as a systems engineer. He is currently the executive vice president for EDS. Paul Chiapparone is a member of the JMU Board of Visitors and has served on the College of Business Executive Advisory Committee. The Chiapparones' daughter Ann graduated from JMU in 1995. |

Byrd, Jr. Senator Byrd is the owner and publisher of Rockingham Publishing, Inc. and Byrd Newspapers, which publish, among other things, the "Daily News Record". Senator Byrd was a member of the Virginia senate from 1947-1965 and the United States Senate from 1965 until 1983. He has a long history of philanthropic involvement with the university. |

An honors program scholarship established in October 1991 in honor of Dr. Carrier's 20th year as president of this institution by Martha Estes Grover '83 in honor of her mother, Dorothy Thomasson Estes '45. Dorothy graduated from Madison College with a B.S. in general education and married Charles E. Estes shortly thereafter. Mrs. Estes died in June 1996. Her daughter, Martha, graduated from JMU with a B.B.A. in finance. She was the chairman and C.E.O. of Great Coastal Express, a trucking company in Richmond, Virginia until May 2002, when the family sold the company. She is now the president of a transportation company. Her husband, John Grover, graduated from JMU in 1981 with a B.B.A. in finance. He, too, has worked as an executive at Great Coastal Express. The Estes and Grover families have been longtime supporters of the university and its projects. |

An honors program scholarship established in November 1994 by Steven B. Nielsen and family. The Madison Scholars Scholarships were begun in 1991 in honor of Dr. Ronald E. Carrier's 20th year as president of this institution. Steve Nielsen graduated from the University of California Long Beach in 1973. He worked at Acme United Corporation from 1973-76, Bergen Brunswig Medical Surgical, Inc. from 1976-78, Hospital Pharmacies, Inc. from 1978-80, again at Bergen Brunswig from 1980-84. He joined General Medical Corporation in 1984, serving as executive vice president until 1988. He became president in 1988, and chairman and chief executive officer of General Medical Corporation in 1984. Both his children are graduates of JMU. |
