Scholarship History:

Established by the friends, family and colleagues of Wilbur Trout Harnsberger Jr., founder and head of the geology department here.  He was born May 24, 1920 in Danville, Virginia.  He earned his bachelor of arts and master's degrees at the University of Virginia.  During World War II, he was a pilot for the Flying Tigers in the China-Burma-India Theater. He worked as a fuels geologist for the Commonwealth of Virginia until he came to Madison College in 1956 to found the geology department.  He was its first department head, and was still in that position in February 1977, when he died of a heart attack.

Scholarship History:

Established by the Geology Department in memory of Catherine King-Frazier in February 1990.  Catherine was an employee in the Geology Department.  She died in 1990 after a 7-year battle with cancer.
