Scholarship History:

Established by Joan S. Kosnik in March 1985 in memory of her husband, Dr. Joseph T. Kosnik. Joe was from Detroit, Michigan, one of 13 children. He graduated from Notre Dame with a naval science degree in 1947. He was a pilot in the U. S. Navy, and then the Navy sent him to Russian language school. He was working at the Naval Communications Station when he and Joan married in 1949. He got a second B.S. degree at Georgetown in business administration in 1950. He received his master's in public administration from Harvard in 1961.  After that, he went to the Naval War College. His last year in the Navy, he was an instructor at the college. The Kosniks had five children and moved 17 times in 21 years during Joe's career with the Navy. Joe earned his Ph.D. in Finance from George Washington University in February 1975, and joined the finance and accounting faculty of Madison College. He was at one time head of the department and received the Small Business Institute Award in the 1980-81 academic year. In 1984 Joe Kosnik was diagnosed with cancer.  He died a year later, in 1985, at the age of 58.

Scholarship History:

Established by Dr. Philip H. Maxwell in June 1989.  Dr. Maxwell graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1952.  He earned his Ph.D. from Florida State University in 1974.  He served in the U.S. Navy for several years and afterward worked for PanAmerican Airlines.  He joined the faculty of Madison College in 1974.  He retired in 1994.

 

 

Shelly Wheeler Financial Engineering Scholarship

Scholarship History:

Established by Shelly Wheeler Howton '92 in November 1993.  Shelly graduated sigma cum laude from JMU with a B.B.A. in finance.  She was a member of Beta Gamma Sigma and involved in the Senior Class Challenge.  She earned her Ph.D. from Florida State University in 1997 and is currently an Assistant Professor of Finance at Villanova University.

Established by Dr. Alfred and Mrs. Lisel Francfort in June 1989.  The scholarship was created as part of the "Excellence Through Achievement" campaign for the James Madison University College of Business.
