Scholarship History: |
The Alexander B. Berry Jr./Linwood G. Parrish Memorial Endowed Scholarship was established by Jane "Gibbie" Parrish Berry '61 and her husband, Alexander "Sandy" B. Berry III in April, 1989 in honor of her father, Linwood G. Parrish, and his father, the Rev. Alexander B. Berry Jr. Mr. Parrish was from Portsmouth, VA. He joined Virginia Power as a clerk in 1928, became a bookkeeper in 1937, and was appointed assistant secretary and eventually became the chief financial officer for the company in 1973. He retired in 1976. He died at age 80 in May 1992. Alexander B. Berry Jr. was born in 1912 in Swan Quarter, NC. He studied engineering but couldn't complete his degree because of the depression. He died in 1954. Sandy Berry applied to college in 1956, and because of his father's early death and the realities of a rural minister's finances, he needed financial assistance. A scholarship fund at his alma mater, the University of Virginia, made it possible for him to complete his education. Gibbie Berry graduated from Madison College with a degree in Secretarial Administration. The Berrys have two children, both of whom are JMU alumni. |
