Scholarship History:

Established by friends and colleagues of Dr. Elizabeth M. Finlayson and BIS alumni in January 1999.  Dr. Finlayson was the founder of the Bachelor of General Studies (BGS) program here, now called the Bachelor of Individual Studies program (BIS).  The BGS program started in the late 1970s as the result of a mandate by the State Council of Higher Education.  Dr. Finlayson directed a committee to work on a program and then met with the State Council to get it approved.  Because of her initial involvement with the planning, she was given the role of director of the program.  Even if she had not been offered the position, she would have requested it as she has been a supporter of the concept of such a degree program since she went back to school herself, after 30 years of traveling as a military wife and raising three children.
