Kristen Shrewsbury

Kristen Shrewsbury, Ph.D., serves as the Coordinator. Kristen Shrewsbury provides English language support for faculty, staff, and students in consultations and through group programs. She loves languages and enjoys working with learners of all proficiency levels. Dr. Shrewsbury has been privileged to travel extensively in the world, to which she attributes her love for experiencing new cultures and meeting new people. Before starting at JMU in 2007, she taught intensive English in the English Language Institute at the University of Delaware. Kristen Shrewsbury holds a Masters in Teaching English as a Second Language from the University of Delaware and a Doctorate of Philosophy in Transformative Studies from the California Institute of Integral Studies. Dr. Shrewsbury will be on leave from JMU for the fall 2017 semester. ESOL Tutor

KC Collazo
Contact Info

KC Collazo is a tutor for English Learners that are working on writing and communicating in English. She loves learning about languages and cultures after her summers studying and working abroad in China and Spain. She has three majors in Hospitality Management, International Affairs, and Spanish with minors in Business, Asian Studies, and Chinese International Business. She hopes to travel and take on the world after graduation with her experiences that she’s gained here at JMU.

Lulu Yang

Lulu Yang is a program facilitator and tutor for English langauge learners. She started with ELLS in spring 2016, and is an Interdisciplinary Liberal Studies (IDLS) major with a double minor in Inclusive Early Childhood and TESOL non-licensure. Lulu is from Kunming, Yunnan Province, China. She came to JMU in 2013 to study because she believes America has the best education. She enjoys YouTube videos and traveling. Lulu plans to be a teacher in the future. 

Emeritus Faculty

Adam White

Adam White joined ELLS fall 2014, and served as the facilitator of English Conversation Club. Adam also served international students in his position as an oIP Leadership in International Networking and Knowledge program (LINKer), where he oriented international students to JMU. Pursuing his passion for teaching English to non-native speakers led him to study abroad in summer 2012 in Sasebo, Japan to obtain a TESL certification with over 100 hours of teaching. Adam also spent fall 2013 semester at Kyung Hee University, Seoul, South Korea, where he participated as a Conversation Partner with South Korean students who wanted to practice English. Adam graduated in May 2015 and majored in International Affairs with minors in Asian Studies and Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages. He now works for the United States Government in Washington, D.C.

Madeline Holden

Madeline Holden joined ELLS fall 2014, and served as the facilitator of Grammar Hour and a Marketing Features Writer through fall 2015. Madeline's love for langauge led her to study abroad in Spain and Italy in summer 2014. An English major, Madeline is in the class of 2016.

Haley Lawrie

Haley Lawrie joined ELLS Fall 2015 and served as the facilitator of English Conversation Club. She majors in international affairs and Spanish, with has served as the President of Sigma Delta Pi (The National Honors Spanish Fraternity), is a member of the JMU speech team, and she also tutors in the Communication center on campus. 

Shirley Yang

Yang Xue, also known in the US as Shirley, served as the Marketing & Outreach Assistant from fall 2014 through fall 2015. Shirley previously served as the International Student Liaison from fall 2013 through spring 2014. From Shanxi province in China, Shirley’s dedication to academic success and increasing language proficiency made her a perfect fit at ELLS. Shirley majored in Marketing in the College of Business, graduating December 2015. She curently attends graduate school for Education at the University of Maryland with the goal of becoming a Chinese language teacher. 

Chris Horton

Chris Horton served as the Peer Educator ESL Tutor for the Spring 2014 semester. Chris brought with him a great love for languages and a history of tutoring in the Communication Center, where he has tutored since fall 2013. Chris is majoring in Integrated Science and Technology (ISAT). 

Kathie Hagy

Kathie Hagy served as a researcher. Kathie graduated from JMU in 2009 with a degree in English. She taught elementary and junior high school English in northwest Japan from 2010-2012. She is working on her M.A.T. with a concentration in TESOL at JMU. Kathie enjoyed teaching a Digital Storytelling Workshop in Fall 2014 for ELLS as part of her thesis work. She also taught an undergraduate wellness-focused writing class. Kathie graduated with her M.A.T. in TESOL in May 2015.


Lani Furbank

Lani Furbank, class of December 2013, served as the Peer Educator ESL Tutor. A Communication Center tutor since fall 2011, Lani’s interest in working with English language learners encouraged her to participate in an ESL tutoring seminar in fall 2012 and to take the Tutoring English as an Other Language course in spring 2013. Her successful completion of the training coupled with her great enthusiasm and professionalism have secured her the position as the first peer educator to work as an ESL tutor at JMU.

Lani earned a BA in the School of Media Arts and Design with a concentration in Broadcast Journalism, and  a minor in Environmental Studies. Lani was involved around campus in the Society of Professional Journalists, JMU Today, Big Brothers Big Sisters and the JMU Honors Program.  Lani is currently an Associate Producer for Let’s Talk Live at WJLA News Channel 8 in the Washington DC Metro Area.

Jose Morales

Jose Morales served as the Bilingual Student Liaison from Spring Semester 2011 until he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in May 2013. Jose majored in Converged Media in the School of Media Arts and Design, with a minor in music and creative writing.  Jose worked on both print and digital marketing materials for ELLS, as well as maintained the website. Inspired by a spring break visit to English support services at George Mason University, Jose founded an English Conversation Club (ECC) that met weekly throughout the academic year. He presented a poster about the ECC at the Colonial Academic Alliance Global Education Conference at Towson University in June 2012.

Weiwei Xu

Weiwei Xu, class of 2014, served as International Student Liaison in Spring Semester 2011. Born in Chongqing, China, Weiwei is an international student at JMU.   She began at JMU through Study Group, an intensive English program, and is majoring in Studio Art.

Andrea Secrist

Andrea “Dre” Secrist served as ELLS Assistant from fall semester 2009 to through fall semester 2010. Dre earned a bachelor’s degree (2008) and a master’s degree (2011) at JMU with the goal of being a Spanish and ESL teacher. Dre’s efforts with ELLS shaped the direction of the area and her invaluable contributions paved the way for programs and student employees in ELLS. Dre founded a Grammar Hour program that met twice a week for the three semesters she worked at ELLS.

Dre spent her first professional year after graduate school teaching English in Madrid, Spain, for the Ministry of Culture and Education. Since fall 2012 she has taught high school ESL in Manassas Park, Virginia. When not traveling during the summer, she also teaches intensive English for Northern Virginia Community College.
