If you are not a Communication Studies major or minor, you can qualify to work as a speech consultant by taking:

Student Speech Consultants have the opportunity to:
- Refine and develop personal speaking skills by assisting others
- Enhance their resume with work experience in the education field
- Earn competitive student worker wage with the possibility for a raise
- Work on-campus during hours that fit around your classes
Requirements for the student positions are:
- Must be returning to JMU for the 2009-2010 school year
- 2.8 cumulative GPA; 3.0 Major GPA
- Must have one of the following:
- Completed SCOM 240, 242, and 245 (welcome applicants who are currently enrolled in any of the above classes who expect to pass)
- Completed SCOM 313
- Collegiate forensic team experience
- Must be able/willing to work 8-12 hours per week
- Must be available until 7 pm one to two nights per week
The student positions are analogous to peer tutors. The functional responsibilities of the student positions are as follows:
- Provide assistance with speech preparation
- Provide advice on time management and study skills
- Provide assistance in comprehending communication concepts/theories
- Provide assistance in issues of communication apprehension
