6-12 Biology

 This academy will feature content covering areas of genetics, evolution, ecology, and plant biology.  We will demonstrate how to address these areas in lesson plans and classroom activities.  We will include areas of technology such as GIS applications in biology.  We will cover aspects of experimental design and analysis to help students understand the investigative nature of science and the scientific process.  Content coverage and methodology will be focused on VA SOL and NSTA standards.

Mike Renfroe

Academy Chair

Dr. Michael H. Renfroe is a Professor in the Biology Department at the College of Science and Mathematics at James Madison UniversityMike teaches biology majors (undergraduate and graduate students) and also teaches science courses for non-science majors and for future K-12 teachers who are specializing in math and science.  In the summer, he teaches rising 9-12 graders in a regional governor’s school program. Mike conducts in-service workshops for science teachers and has taught a Secondary Life Science Institute.   

Mike’s areas of specialization are botany and environmental studies and he conducts research on conservation of rare and endangered plant species and also on antioxidants in foods and beverages from plants. He is currently Vice President of the Virginia Academy of Science. 

Dr. Renfroe earned a Bachelor’s degree in Forest Management from NC State University; a Master of Science degree from The Ohio State University; a Master of Philosophy from Yale University; and a Ph. D. from Yale University.
