As history and social studies teachers, we rarely get the opportunity to hone our skills, deepen our knowledge of content matter, and converse with colleagues about the real work of teaching. Hence, this Academy afforded those three opportunities to new and experienced middle and high school teachers, as we shared in our joint pursuit of creating the next generation of educated citizens in our digital age. The challenge which sits in the desks before us each day is to reach every child in our classrooms. Extending our repertoire of strategies specifically designed for social studies, we are better prepared to meet the diverse needs our students bring with them in the 21st century. In addition to the seminars taught by experts on differentiation and technology, we had master teachers who shared their own practical strategies from their classrooms around our Commonwealth. Additionally, speakers with expertise in content deepened our intellectual understanding of the complexities of history and social studies topics addressed in the newly revised SOL's. Finally, in response to participant feedback, we added more opportunities for you to learn from each other, share your favorite strategies, and support one another while working on lesson plans and projects to be used in your classroom the following year.
