Freshman:

Teacher Education Process

Complete Intent Apply to TK-20-online (ESC) and meet with Dr. Beverly for initial advising

Begin meeting teacher education acceptance process
     Acceptance into teacher education (can be tracked on TK-20)
          Pass Praxis or having waiving SAT/ACT score (check score on ESC)
          C or Better Math 107, GWRIT 103, GPSY 160
          2 references (school, employment, leader of organization-not family/friends)
          Complete Child Abuse Training-on-line (ESC)
          Complete Universal Precautions Training -on-line (ESC)
          Minimum GPA 2.5

Suggested Tasks
     Familiarize yourself with:
          Major and minor requirements
          Study Abroad opportunities (plan ahead-best done sophomore year or
          may/summer)

          Library
          Computer Labs
          ETMC
          The Learning Support Center
          The Writing Center
          Other Campus Support Services

Sophomores:

Juniors

***YOU MUST BE ACCEPTED INTO TEACHER EDUCATION BEFORE THE FALL SEMESTER

Suggested Tasks:

  •  Complete most of your major requirements before next spring
  •  Complete study abroad opportunities (may/summer)
  •  Awareness of future tests & fees (Graduate school, VRA, VCLA, Praxis II-2sections, Teacher licensing fees)

Seniors

*Complete Graduation Application and Submit to advisor

*Check on Graduation accessories (clothes, invitation, arrangements)
JMU Bookstore

*Complete Student Teaching Application-check deadlines

*ATTEND - ST packet review sessions for May/Summer/Fall 2009 & Spring 2010 
Sign up sheets will be available soon in the ESC. Sessions are voluntary, but sign up is required to attend one of the meetings

*Complete Application to Graduate School
Application form, $55 fee, 2 letters of recommendation, 2-3 page written statement (why special education-and overall goals), official transcript, GPA 2.75

Praxis II-- use

  •  Special Education: Application of Core Principles Across Disability Categories
  •  Elementary Education: Content Knowledge---highly recommended for highly qualified
  •  Any other subject areas you wish to be highly qualified to teach

*Apply for Graduation-before December 
      Attach and unofficial transcript for your advisor (I will remove it)


*Apply for SPED licensure

You complete:
      Application---page 1
      College Verification page 2 part 1

JMU completes:
      College Verification pg 2 part 2
      Requests official transcript
      Sends complete application package to state


You send/deliver to ESC:
     Complete application
     Nonrefundable application fee---$50
     Praxis II scores
     VRA score
