Jen Newton

Education:

• Ph.D.  University of Kansas, Special Education
• MS. Ed.  University of Kansas, Early Childhood Special Education
• B.S.  University of Kansas, Speech/Language/Hearing Disorders

Program Involvement:

• Teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in both the Inclusive Early Childhood Education (IECE), and the Exceptional Education Department (EXED)

Professional Experience and Interests:

• Prior early interventionist
• Former early childhood special education teacher. 
• Worked as a parent educator on early literacy
• Interests include: special education teacher education, school/university partnerships, and special education policy

Current Research:

• Early-Career Faculty Needs in Special Education
• The role of special educators in the changing and dynamic educational climate
• Oral language and literacy

Three Pieces of Advice for Future/New Teachers:

• Presume competence in your students
• All students can learn; it’s your job and your challenge to teach them
• Continue to learn everyday; from your students, with your students, and in your life
