I have grown as a professional through my practicum with the Career Development Academy. As an aspiring elementary school teacher, I have always viewed these adults as the parents of my future students. In my future classroom, I hope to have strong parent-teacher relationships, to provide a strong support system for my students. Working with the adults in the CDA has boosted my confidence in communicating effectively across language and cultural barriers, a skill that will be crucial throughout my future career. Additionally, my practicum with the Career Development Academy has made me incredibly appreciative of the freedoms and privileges that I have had throughout my lifetime. The students at the CDA are some of the strongest people I have ever met, as they have overcome struggle after struggle, entering the United States in hopes of a better life. Spending time talking to each student has made me appreciate the unique backgrounds and cultural diversity that exists all around, and I have come to realize that we are all simply human.
I encountered many surprises throughout my experience working with the CDA, but my biggest surprise was actually substitute teaching all of the children of the women in my conversation table. I realized how important this program is not only to the adults taking the classes, but also to their children’s education. I also realized how important this experience is to my own life, because when I have my own students I will now have experience in communicating with their parents who may not speak English fluently. Parents play a huge role in their child’s education being successful, and these women are motivated to learn in order to help their children. This shows me their power and level of dedication to education. Therefore, it proves to me that their children will have a better chance at success due to the level of assistance they receive from their parents and due to how involved their parents are in the schools. Many of the women had previously volunteered in their children’s schools on many different occasions. Also, a couple of them were teachers in their native countries, but despite the language barriers they are working towards making their dreams come true here in the U.S. The experience I have gained working with these women, and all of the other members of my conversation table, has shown me how important the CDA is and how successful it is in helping adults conquer their dreams, one step at a time. It has shown me how much I take for granted every single day, that these individuals struggle with. I have learned so much more than I could imagine working with these individuals and hearing their stories. This experience has truly made me a better person and student. The CDA is an incredible program and I am blessed to have had the honor to experience it and be a part of it.
