TESOL Licensure Steps to Apply

Applying to Teacher Education

You must complete all Teacher Education requirements for admissions listed below.  Please note:  You will be blocked from taking designated education courses until the following requirements are met.

√   Program of study letter obtained from your education advisor that specifies required courses for the licensure programs,

√   Declare your major and teaching concentration minor.  (The form is available in your program area.  It should be signed by your education advisor and returned to the Registrar's Office),

√    Give the AR-2 reference forms to two persons (employers, clergy, teachers, or other professionals) who know you well.  They must have known you in a professional capacity for a minimum of 6 months and be able to evaluate your potential as a future educator.   Forms are returned directly to the ESC,

√    You must complete the following course requirements with a minimum grade of "C":   GWRIT 103 / GWRTC 103 (or equivalent), MATH (or Cluster III equivalent), GPSYC 160 (or equivalent).  Provide ESC with a transcript of any courses from other institutions which may be used for admission and do not appear on your JMU transcript,

√   Take the Praxis I: Academic Skills Assessment and have the scores sent to JMU.  Our test code is 5392.  Your Praxis scores may be waived if your SAT® scores or ACT scores qualify - click here for additional information,

√   You must have and maintain a GPA of 2.5 or better.  GPA information is updated in the Teacher Education database at the end of each semester.

√   In order to be accepted into teacher education, you must have no record of any felony conviction or misdemeanors involving children or drugs, or founded complaint of child abuse or neglect,**

√   Complete online training in Universal Precautions.  UP training sessions are offered by the JMU Health Center at JMU - Universal Precautions.   ESC receives verification that you have completed the training.  NOTE:  HLTH 204, HLTH 370, or Red Cross First Aid or equivalent training will meet this requirement,

√   Complete the Child Abuse Prevention Training online at ESC website and pass the quiz after your training session.  Your score will be sent electronically to the ESC.  Keep the certificate that you print,

√   All professional education students complete the Multicultural Dispositions Index (MDI; Thompson, 2011) at four points during their programs:  during the Admissions process, in EDUC 300, prior to field experience, and at the end of the program.  Please note that your responses to this are ANONYMOUS; you will be asked to use a code name that only YOU know.   (Be sure to keep it for your records.)  However, completion of the instrument is a required part of the application process.

√   Once you have completed all of the requirements previously listed, you will need to subscribe to Tk20.  Click the link to purchase your student account.  You will be able to log-in to Tk20 (within 3-5 days after you have purchased your account) using your MyMadison user name and password.  Then complete the Application to Teacher Education in Tk20.
