2007 VAHPERD Graduate Scholarship

November 5, 2007
By: Amanda Rivera

JMU students do it once again! Congratulations to Amanda Howard for receiving the Virginia Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (VAHPERD) Graduate Scholarship!! “It was quite a surprise finding out first I was nominated by the staff here at JMU, and even more so to learn I received the VAHPERD Graduate Scholarship. It's a great honor for not only myself, but also JMU who has had a student receive this award the past 4 or 5 years,” says the Sport and Recreation Management graduate student. As the sole recipient chosen among all the colleges and universities in Virginia, Amanda Howard boasts an impressive record. In addition to the VAHPERD scholarship, Amanda was also chosen to receive another staff-nominated award, the Marilyn Crawford Scholarship. This past summer, the JMU student interned at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado and when she’s not bumping elbows with Olympic athletes, she attends the GKIN 100 classes as a Teaching Assistant. Using this same ambition for her future endeavors, she says, “I ideally see myself coaching college or age group swimming following graduation before eventually pursuing my Ph.D.”
