Computer Science Graduate Takes Top Honors at Microsoft Competition
A. Brooks Hollar, Computer Science graduate, former adjunct professor for JMU and current VCU graduate student led a team that won first place in the Microsoft Imagine Cup 2006, a software design invitational contest. Their team will represent the United States at worldwide finals to be held in New Delhi, India in August.
With input from Children’s Hospital of Richmond the team developed PocketDoc, a system that links doctors and patients through mobile devices. By using a central database and tabletPC doctors can create treatment schedules with reminder alerts for their patients to receive on a handheld device. “Flashcards” with instructions for more complicated procedures can also be viewed by the patients allowing them more autonomy in their treatment program. Data (such heart rate, blood pressure, etc.) can also be collected from the patients to allow doctors to monitor a patient remotely.
