Career and Academic Planning offers the following job search resources for JMU alumni:

Alumni who have graduated within the past 6 months receive all services that currently enrolled students do and should refer to the “Student” section of the Career and Academic Planning Website

Services for All Alumni:
Recruit a Duke is our online job listing database which can give registered alumni access to a variety of job postings that require professional experience. To register on or update your Recruit a Duke account go to https://jmu-csm.symplicity.com/ and choose “Students/Alumni” to proceed with either establishing or reactivating your account.

  • Once you have completed those steps you will receive a confirmation email within 1-3 business days which will let you know that your account is active and you may use it to begin exploring job listings.

FOCUS is our online career guidance system which provides registered users the opportunity to complete a variety of short self-assessments and explore career and graduate school options. To register with FOCUS simply call Career and Academic Planning weekdays Monday-Friday from 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM to begin the registration process.

GOALEE.com is a free hybrid of a professional networking site likeLinkedIn and a matchmaking site like eHarmony. Users set goals for themselves (ie: “I want to find people working in finance.”), and Goalee matches them with other users that can help them achieve their goals, ranked by how similar the users are on a personal level. Goalee then guides the user through the process of making targeted, effective outreach.

Services for Alumni 7 Months -5 Years from Graduation

  • Job Search Consultations*:  Alumni who are within five years of their graduation date and therefore still entry level in their profession, may meet in person, on line (via email or Skype), or over the phone with a member of the Career and Academic Planning staff, up to 3 times total, to discuss general job and graduate school search strategies or for resume and cover letter reviews.  To schedule a consultation you must first activate or update your Recruit-A-Duke account (see instructions above). Once you have received confirmation that your account is active you may call the office anytime Monday-Friday between 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM at 540-568-6555 to schedule a consultation.

*Due to the high demand for our services throughout the calendar year from currently enrolled students, we are only able to schedule alumni appointments during certain weeks. We thank you in advance for your patience and flexibility!

The professional expertise of the staff in Career and Academic Planning is working with graduating students and new graduates (also considered “entry-level”).   It is important for experienced professionals (5+ years of experience) to connect with either a career counselor or career coach who has the training and expertise to assist established professionals with their job search and professional development needs.
