Upon completing COB 204, students should be able to do the following.

- Explain information system concepts including input, processing, and output.
- Describe information system components including hardware, software, databases and telecommunications.
- Organizational foundation of information systems
- Demonstrate understanding of the new role and widening scope of information systems in organizations.
- Explain the strategic role information systems play in organizations.
- Identify and define the major types of information systems including transaction processing systems, management information systems, decision support systems, expert systems and Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP).
- Describe the ethical and social impact of information systems.
- Hardware
- Explain the purpose and major characteristics of the six major hardware components of an information system:
- primary memory,
- secondary storage,
- the central processing unit,
- input devices,
- output devices, and
- communication devices.
- Describe the different types of computers including
- personal computers,
- midrange computers,
- mainframe computers, and
- supercomputers.
- Explain how one would select computer hardware.
- Software
- Explain the concepts of systems software and application software.
- Explain how one would select software.
- Demonstrate understanding of the evolution of programming languages.
- Use common personal productivity tools.
- Databases
- Define the data hierarchy including field, record, file and database.
- Describe the different types of databases.
- Explain how one would select database management software.
- Create a database using a relational DBMS such as Access. Demonstrate the ability to create reports, queries and join two tables in the DBMS.
- Telecommunications
- Demonstrate an introductory level of knowledge about telecommunication and network components such as media, devices, software, and protocols.
- Explain the concepts of LAN, WAN, and network topology.
- Explain client/server systems.
- The Internet
- Explain how businesses use the Internet.
- Describe the use of E-commerce.
- Describe the World Wide Web and concepts such as browsers, search engines, and HTML.
- Describe Intranets and Extranets.
- Explain Internet privacy and security issues.
- Use the Internet to conduct research, find information, and communicate.
- Create a personal web page.
