Education
Doctoral Program in Assessment and Measurement
An innovative doctoral program in assessment and measurement began in the fall of 1998. This Doctor of Philosophy degree is designed to meet the expanding accountability, quality assurance, and outcome assessment needs of the 21st century. The program emphasizes real-world applications, and experiential research projects are integral to the design of the program. This is the first doctorate of its kind and has attracted considerable attention. For example, this doctoral program was the focus of a three-year Fund for the Improvement of Post Secondary Education grant designed to assist in the identification of external internship sites and exploration of the generalizability of the program to other locations and instructional modalities. The grant also helped to establish a National External Advisory Council to determine if the curriculum, practica, and internship sites met the national need for assessment practitioners.
Research and Innovation
Computer-Based Testing
Computer-based testing is an area of expertise for the Center for Assessment and Research Studies at JMU. There are currently conventional computer-based tests in several areas, such as information literacy, oral communication, and quantitative and scientific reasoning. In addition, Center faculty have developed a number of computer-based versions of assessment instruments that are now available for use by external clients.
