In conjunction with Sawhill Gallery: 2009/2010 James Madison University Wampler Professor Howard Risatti and co-curator Steven Glass present an exhibition of craftwork for exclusive showing in the Sawhill Gallery. The exhibition includes studio furniture, ceramics, glass, jewelry, and fiber. These studio/artist works are presented with non-studio works of a commercial nature such as plastic chairs, and throwaway paper cups to bring attention to the assignment of aesthetic value to ordinary and not so ordinary objects. December 7 – 12 MFA Exhibition by Aimee George The School of Art and Art History presents the work of Master of Fine Arts Candidate Aimee George. This exhibition is the culmination of her graduate studies at James Madison University.

November 16 – December 2 Student/Faculty Silent Auction artWorks opens its doors to the Student/Faculty Silent Auction on November 16 and ends November 18 at 5:00 p.m. The art in this exhibition runs the gamut of subject matter, media, and expertise. Students and faculty in the School of Art and Art History as well as some musical additions come together to benefit the gallery. The James Madison Universtiy community is given the opportunity to examine work on display in the gallery and to bid on artwork created by its art students and art faculty. FACULTY, STAFF, STUDENT AND ALUMNI ANNOUNCEMENTS FACULTY AGNES CARBREY was a Fellow in Residence in the International Exchange Program of the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts Moulin`A Nef facility in Auvillar, France during May of 2009. She will take JMU students abroad to paint in southern France as part of JMU's International Study Abroad Program in May of 2010. This past April she was invited to be featured artist at the Boxerwood Gardens Earth Art Festival, (childhood home of Sally Mann), and completed 15 life size human forms as site-specific works, leading a team of five, including one JMU student, Jackie Tugman, and one VCU student, Anne Lassere. Other team members were Jeanne Hepler of Lexington and Suzan Frangos of Harrisonburg. In November/December of 2009, Carbrey will show at the DeMatteis Gallery in Annapolis with painter, Ryan Russell. Articles by SUKJIN CHOI, Assistant Professor of Art, have been published in the Monthly Ceramic Art of Korea. The published articles include: Sukjin Choi’s Onggi was on display at the Dorim Exhibition, the 30th Exhibition of Ceramic Department alumni at Ewha Womans University at Ewha Arts Center in Korea. Sukjin was invited by the Shandong Zibo Ceramic Art Association of China to lead a workshop dealing with traditional Korean Surface Techniques for the 12th China International Woodfire Festival. She donated her work, “Celadon Bowls”, to the Zibo Museum. Her works will be displayed in the International Pottery Art Museum. Assistant Professor Sukjin Choi installed her site-specific work “Trace” in front of the Smith House this week. The artist is working with a unique adhesive medium that is applied directly to the pavers in the sculpture garden. Sukjin installed her outdoor sculpture “Stretching Myself Toward Light” in the Smith House Courtyard last week. The sculpture will be displayed from November 1st to March 27th. Her works can be seen at the website, www.valleyarts.org. TRUDY COLE, Professor of Graphic Design, was selected as a Gold Award Winner for her “Two Retreads Get Hitched Wedding Invitation” entry to the 39th Creativity Annual Awards. This year thousands of entries were received from all over the world and the winners selected by this year’s panel represent 36 countries and 32 U.S. states. Trudy’s entries were considered by the judges to be an example of outstanding creativity and design. The Gold Award is only given to top 10% of entries. DAWN HACHENSKI, Associate Professor of Graphic Design, will be presenting her paper, ”The Twentieth Century Did Not Invent Graphic Design: Returning Letterpress to Design Education” at the 2010 CAA Conference in Chicago during the A Case for Letterpress session. Dawns' book,The Prairies, has been placed in the Permanent Collection's of the New York Public Library and Brown University.JOHN OTT, Associate Professor of Art History, was awarded a 2009-2010 Smithsonian Postdoctoral Fellowship for his proposed research project "Brotherhood on Paper: Giacomo Patri and the Representation of Interracial Solidarity in the American Labor Movement". This fall he will present talks on this topic at the American Studies Association Annual Conference in Washington and at Randolph-Macon College. John also published the article “Reform in Redface: The Taos Society of Artists Play Indian” in the Summer 2009 issue of the journal American Art. REBECCA SILBERMAN, Assistant Professor of Art, recently exhibited "All Things Together, All Things Apart, and Everyting Left Over" in all three galleries of the Staunton Augusta Art Center in downtown Staunton, Virginia. She presented large and small works on paper, tintypes and other alternative process images along with installations featuring lens-based optical works. GREG STEWART, Associate Professor of Art, presented his project titled "Beast or By-Product: Food Shelter Clothing" at Dean Project Space in New York City. Greg's work titled "Homesteaders" was presented at the Al Sabah Gallery in Kuwait City, Kuwait. This summer Greg contributed to the project "Flexible Geography". This project included a number of movable gardens that moved throughout Queens, New York, and then traveled to sites in Harrisonburg, ultimately converging on the front lawn of the Harrisonburg League of Therapists. The project was partly funded by grants from the Arts Council of the Valley and the Queens Council on the Arts. Greg also exhibited new drawings at SCOPE Hamptons this past July.
LISA TUBACH, Assistant Professor of Art, was invited to present a solo exhibition and public lecture at the Stalder Gallery in Falls City, NE, November 20 – December 17, 2009. Lisa will be a part of an exhibition in Paramaribo, Suriname, through the Art-In-Embassies Program in 2010. In November 2010, she will have a solo exhibition in the Ghent district of Norfolk, VA at ArtGallery (http://www.artgalleryls.net/), directed by Lorrie Saunders. SANG YOON, Professor of Graphic Design, presented a paper titled “The Street Graphics of Seoul, Korea: An Analysis of Design Iconography and Social Relations” in July at the 4th International Conference on the Arts in Society held in Venice. Sang served on the Fulbright Japan/Korea Review Committee on October 11-12 in Washington, D.C. SUSAN ZURBRIGG, Associate Professor of Art, attended the annual Governors and Trustees Weekend at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Skowhegan, Maine. Susan Zurbrigg is one of the featured artists in the September exhibition "Funktified", an exhibition that explores the visual manifestations of the Funk aesthetic, curated by Stephanie Dinkins at The Stellar Center for the Arts, University Art Gallery, SUNY Stony Brook, New York. Funkiness is an aesthetic of deliberate confusion, of uninhibited soulful behavior that remains viable because of a faith in instinct, a joy of self, and a joy of life, particularly black American life. Funk is its own reward." Two photography professors completed artist residencies through the Virginia Atelier at the Cite Internationale des Arts in Paris, France. Modler has a solo exhibit at University of North Carolina at Greensboro opening October 2nd. He will be presenting at the North Carolina Art Education Association Convention in Winston-Salem in October, facilitating a seminar on visual journals at the North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching in November, and has a co-authored book on visual journals debuting in Spring 2010. Photography Students: Nancy Daly, ’08, has been accepted into the Photo and Electronic Media MFA Program at Maryland Institute College of Art for Fall ’09. Katie Frichtel, '99, has a successful photography and design business, Raven + Crow Studio, in Brooklyn, NY along with her husband, Troy Farmer, '98. Sarah Pope, ’08, has been awarded a scholarship for the MFA in Photography at SCAD Atlanta and will start Fall 09.
