Undergraduate Program: How to Apply

Thank you for your interest in the School of Art, Design, and Art History. Our process is unique in that students interested in majoring in Graphic Design, Architectural Design, Industrial Design, or Studio Art must complete an electronic portfolio submission in addition to James Madison University's application process. Please follow the steps below to complete your submission:

PROSPECTIVE FRESHMEN:

  1. Apply to James Madison University.
    November 1 - Early Action deadline
    January 15 - Regular Admission deadline
    ALL additional materials (transcripts, SAT scores, and personal statements) must also be received by the dates listed above. Official JMU application forms can be completed on-line at the JMU Admissions website (http://www.jmu.edu/admissions/undergrad/index.shtml).

  2. Sign up for an On-Campus Portfolio Review Day.
    The School of Art, Design and Art History requires a gateway admission process in order to be accepted to our programs.  On-campus portfolio feedback sessions for prospective freshmen will take place in the newly renovated Duke Hall at the corner of Grace Street and Main Street. Prospective high school seniors MUST pre-register online in order to have their portfolio reviewed on that day. Click the appropriate date below to sign up:
  3. Submit a Portfolio to SlideRoom for SADAH admissions at jmuart.slideroom.com.
    November 1 - Early Action portfolio submission deadline
    January 15 - Regular Admission portfolio submission deadline

Prospective freshmen are encouraged to participate in an official on-campus portfolio feedback session to be considered for admission, meet with our faculty, learn about the school’s many programs, and tour of our facilities.  Students will be considered for admission by submitting a completed Slideroom portfolio, but in order to qualify for scholarship, prospective students must attend an on-campus portfolio review day. TRANSFER STUDENTS:

  1. Apply to James Madison University.
    October 15 - Deadline for Spring semester admission to the University
    February 1 - Deadline for Summer semester admission
    March 1 - Deadline for Fall semester admission

Prospective transfer students can receive feedback about their portfolio prior to submitting it to SlideRoom by participating in an official on- or off-campus portfolio feedback session. On-campus feedback sessions include an informational session about the school’s many programs and tours of our facilities and are required to be considered for a scholarship. CHANGE OF MAJOR STUDENTS:

All change of major students intending to major in Graphic Design, Architectural Design, Studio Art, or pursue an emphasis in Industrial Design, must successfully complete a portfolio review for the School of Art, Design, and Art History in order to change their major.

  1. Submit a portfolio for SADAH admissions to SlideRoom at jmuart.slideroom.com.
    In addition to submitting your portfolio, upload copies of your unofficial JMU transcripts and statement of intent.
    October 15 - Deadline for Spring semester portfolio submissions
    February 1 - Deadline for Summer semester portfolio submissions
    March 1 - Deadline for Fall semester portfolio submissions

  2. Sign up for an On-Campus Portfolio Review Day.
    The School of Art, Design and Art History requires a gateway admission process in order to be accepted to our programs.  On-campus portfolio feedback sessions for Change of Majors will take place in the newly renovated Duke Hall at the corner of Grace Street and Main Street. Click the appropriate date below to sign up:
  3. Upon successfully passing the portfolio review, change of major students receive a mailed letter that must be brought to the SADAH Office, Duke 1011, with a completed change of major form to officially declare within the School of Art, Design, and Art History.

If change of major students are interested in receiving feedback about their portfolio prior to submitting it to SlideRoom, they are encouraged to participate in an official on-campus portfolio feedback session. SCHOLARSHIPS:

Students wishing to be considered for a scholarship to SADAH are required to attend an on-campus Portfolio Review Day and submit additional materials through Slideroom.  Please submit online through your Slideroom portfolio:

  • A digital copy of your arts resume
  • One letter of recommendation from an arts professional
  • A digital image of one work of art with an accompanying 500-word essay describing how their choice demonstrates their qualifications for a scholarship.

PORTFOLIO FEEDBACK/REVIEW SESSIONS:

Portfolio Feedback Sessions are held throughout the Fall semester for prospective students to meet our faculty and gain professional feedback on their physical portfolio prior to applying to the School of Art, Design and Art History.  All prospective students are encouraged to attend one of these sessions.

  • On Campus Sessions
    For prospective sophomores and juniors, we will have an open feedback session occuring simultaneously to our admissions portfolio review appointments.  You do not need to pre-register to attend the portfolio feedback session.  On-campus portfolio feedback sessions will take place in the newly renovated Duke Hall at the corner of Grace Street and Main Street.Click here for a downloadable map.

    October 10, 2015 - Noon to 5:00pm (follows JMU Open House)
    November 14, 2015 - Noon to 5:00pm (follows JMU Open House)
    January 23, 2015 - 9:00am to 1:00pm

    
  • Off Campus Sessions
    JMU faculty will be attending these events to give feedback on portfolios submitted by prospective freshmen. You can complete the on-line rsvp form here.

ARE YOU INTENDING TO MAJOR IN ART HISTORY?

Students intending to major in art history are not required to submit a portfolio or additional materials for review, but should follow the regular JMU admissions process.
