Task Force Objective
The objective of the Task Force is to develop recommendations for
the formation of University initiatives that will combine the talents,
resources, and strengths of the science, math, and technology programs
to provide unique opportunities for faculty and students. The envisioned
programs may be academic (majors, minors, concentrations), collaborative
research efforts, centers, or themes that are responsive to the
societal needs of the 21st Century. The hope is that such initiatives
will place JMU in a competitive posture as a singularly distinctive
university in Virginia.
The Process
The Task Force is following a two-step procedure.
1. Work through a process of thinking broadly, developing a list
of ideas that represent the thoughts of a wide contingent of the
University's faculty and staff.
2. Develop a set of criteria with which ideas could be evaluated.
Using the criteria, evaluate each programmatic idea against the
University's mission, resources, and expertise of faculty and
staff to recommend the few, most promising concepts for further
detailed follow-up.
The recommendations will be presented to the Academic Council by
March 31, 2000.
