Faculty Activity Survey,
Summary For 1985 To 1999

The Office of Institutional Research has conducted Faculty Activity Surveys since 1973. The purpose of the surveys is to determine how faculty allocate their time in various activities. The value in these surveys is to help communicate to JMU’s various publics how faculty allocate their time. In tables 1 and 2 the results of these surveys is displayed since 1985. The average number of hours spent by faculty during a typical week has varied only slightly from 52.4 hours to 55.2 hours. The value comes in reviewing the percentage distribution of effort over the years. As shown in Table 2, faculty devoted a higher percentage of their time to instructional activity in 1999-2000 (70.1 percent) than in 1985 (59.8 percent). The percentage of time devoted to research/scholarly activity, public service, academic support, and student support decreased from 1985. Only institutional support remained fairly stable. These data appear to indicate that faculty did not work any more hours in 1999-2000, but that their effort is increasingly focused on instructional activities.

Table 3 displays the percentage of time devoted to different activities by college. There was little variance between colleges.

In early winter of 2002 the Fall 2001 Faculty Activity Survey results will be displayed. An analysis will be conducted of the time devoted to different activities based on the number of years at JMU. Are newer faculty spending their time differently than more mature faculty?
