This is correct! You just need to get here!
This program is for grades 6-12 only. We offer more age-appropriate STEM opportunities on campus for PK-5 that you can read about here.
Two hours
Fall semester: October 3rd-November 18th except October 12th-14th (our Fall break). The days and times that each experience is available varies and can be found on the respective webpages. These are determined by the hosting professor's teaching schedule and are therefore not flexible.
Spring semester: January 30th-April 28th except March 13th-17th (our Spring break). The days and times that each experience is available varies and can be found on the respective webpages. These are determined by the hosting professor's teaching schedule and are therefore not flexible.
Up to 50. While we understand this is a constraint for many teachers, please understand our limitations. (1) Each session can only hold 25 students due to fire-code regulations of our lab spaces and/or equipment availability. (2) Our faculty are not able to host more than one session in any given day as they do not have four-hour blocks of time available with their own teaching schedules and other responsibilities. Therefore, if you bring more than 25 students, half will do one experience and half will do a different experience. To help you identify experiences with overlapping discipline and skill alignments, please see our alignment tables here.
You will receive an email with this information from Ralph Rich, administrative assistant for the STEM Center.
We do not have the expertise in the Virginia standards of learning that is needed to accurately map these programs to standards in the associated disciplines; however, we understand that information is helpful for integrating these types of experiences into your lesson plans. If, after reading through the full description, you have questions about one of the programs that would be helpful in determining the most appropriate standards alignment, please don't hesitate to contact us.
Yes! Each description includes resources (mostly short YouTube videos) that we ask you to show your students prior to the visit. You will also find extra resources for teachers who are looking to acquire a little more background knowledge on the content and skills with which their students will be engaged.
After reading through the descriptions here and identifying the best options for your students, complete this form. We will review them as they are received. When we review your form, we will first contact the hosting faculty member of your top choices to confirm their availability and identify possible dates and then email you immediately to follow-up on the request.
