Duties:

Do you want to utilize your organizational skills and customer service skills in a teamwork environment? If so, the City of Harrisonburg Parks and Recreation Department's Recreation Aide may be the right job for you!

The Recreation Aide is a year round part-time position (no benefits) with a starting rate of $11.63 per hour. The ideal candidate for this position will assist with the implementation of a variety of athletic, recreation, playground and day camp activities, programs, services and events, including enforcement of program, facility and activity rules and regulations. Applicants who are not selected for this position may be considered for future vacancies if other positions/shifts become available at a later date.

The Recreation Aide:

  • Receives visitors;
  • Responds to questions and provides information related to Parks and Recreation programs and activities;
  • Processes payments, registrations, rentals and transactions;
  • Assists with facilities preparation for programs and events, including cleaning and maintenance of facilities and equipment;
  • Assists with summer childcare and after school recreation program by supervising children, planning and implementing specific activities for participants, and enforcing program/activity rules and regulations;
  • Opens and closes the recreation facility as needed.

Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED or equivalent combination of education and experience;
  • Some experience serving as a recreational aide or group leader required;
  • Exemplary customer service abilities required
  • Availability:

            - During the school year: An afternoon/evening shift from 3:30pm to 6:00pm or 9:00pm              (dependent upon shift assignment) at least 4 days per week (Monday through Friday) and every other weekend preferred.

            - During the summer: Shifts will vary but will ideally include every other Saturday with an average of 30-35 hours per week.

Successful applicants for this position will be subject to a criminal background check and drug screening.

Physical Requirements: This is light work requiring the exertion of up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, up to 10 pounds of force frequently and a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to move objects; work requires balancing, stooping, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, operation of machines, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions.
