Christina Damico ('13, '14M) helps prepare Henrico County Student Teachers

The third in a series of love letters to the College of Education, Christina Damico ('13, '14M) was chosen to speak to the Fall 2014 cohort of Student Teachers from 12 different universities entering Henrico County Public Schools (HCPS). Here she talks about how her time in the College of Education prepared her to be able to encourage her future colleagues as they enter classrooms for their student teaching experience.

Dear College of Education,

I am so grateful to the College of Education for preparing me for my career as an educator.  In my first two months as a teacher, the lessons I learned from COE have proven invaluable.  I specifically am thankful to Dr. Sluss for always reminding me that the good days beat out the tough ones.  She taught me to approach each new day with a positive attitude and to make sure that school was fun and full of new experiences.  I try as often as I can to integrate the things I learned in her Creative Learning class into my daily routine.  The lessons I learned from JMU COE has helped me feel as prepared as I possibly could have during these first few months.

Each semseter, hiring specialists from HCPS identify a handful of teachers to help mentor each crop of student teachers they welcome into their school system.  This year, CoE Graduate and First Year Teacher, Christina Damico ('13, '14M), was selected to speak to the 2014 cohort at the October 15th HCPS Welcome Reception for Student Teachers and Counselor Interns.
