The United States Department of Agriculture is accepting applications for the Virginia Conservation Innovation Grant (CIG) that supports the development and adoption of innovative conservation approaches and technologies in Virginia. CIG does not fund research projects, with the exception of on-farm conservation research. Proposals must address at least one of the following topics:

  • Containerized Longleaf Pine Production Project
  • Innovation in Cropping Systems (Crop Rotation, Cover Crops, Soil Compaction Management) for Improving or Maintaining Soil Health
  • Innovation in Nutrient Management Strategies and Techniques
  • Management of Large Animal Mortalities
  • Treatment measures to address the in-stream loading of excess nutrients and sediment from Legacy Sediments trapped by historic millpond dams
  • Use of Thinning Regimens and Staggered Planting to Convert Loblolly Pine Strands to Longleaf Pine Strands

Funding: Approximately $450,000 is available to support up to six awards.  Individual grants will not exceed $75,000
