Steve hails from the small southwest Virginia town of Galax where he played every sport possible along with being a leader in the marching, concert and jazz bands.  His experience as an Eagle Scout prepared him for his future career in adventure recreation working camps and educational programs during his time as an undergraduate student at Virginia Tech (Social Studies Education) and masters at Radford University (Recreation Studies).  Steve worked in parks and recreation in Blacksburg, Roanoke County, Roanoke City, and Wythe County before moving into campus recreation at East Carolina University in 1995.

Steve has been married to Deena since 1992 and they have two children, Dylan a graduate of Radford University and Will, a current JMU Duke studying Archeology.  Steve and Deena love to travel and camp around the country with their two pugs, Cody and Lily in the summers.  Hiking, mountain biking, skiing and canoeing top the list of his favorite sports.  You can find Steve either exercising around campus at noon or in the fitness center getting ready for that next adventure!
