UREC Adventure Camps

Is your child ready for something new this summer? Give them the chance to try new things, spend a lot of time outdoors, make new friends, and work on overcoming challenges with our Adventure Day Camps (Ages 9-11) and High Adventure Camps (Ages 12-14)

Adventure Day Camp (9-11)

Adventure Day Camp includes team-building games, low challenge course, Disc Golf, and the UREC Climbing Wall. Weather permitting, Adventure Day Camp includes four off-campus trips each week such as outdoor rock climbing, a swimming hole hike, canoeing/kayaking on the Shenandoah River, geo-caching, and a trip to Sherando Lake or Todd Lake. Sessions 1, 3, 5, & 7 will feature a different schedule from Sessions 2, 4, & 6. Campers are welcome to sign up for as many weeks as they'd like!

Cost: $200/week

High Adventure Camp (12-14)

There are two High Adventure Camps offered Summer 2019.

  • In Rock Climbing camp, kids will learn climbing knots, climbing technique, safety procedures, belaying and rappelling. UREC's state of the art indoor climbing facility will be used for basic instruction on the first day and in the event of inclement weather. The remainder of the days will be spent at different climbing areas in the area primarily in the George Washington National Forest. This camp includes one overnight camping trip on Thursday night at Hone Quarry campground. No prior experience is required. 
  • Schedule: June 17 - 21, 2019
  • Cost: $300/week

  • In Water Sports camp, kids will learn how to read basic river features, water safety, and manuvering in class I/II whitewater. Canoeing, rafting, stand-up paddle boarding, and kayaking will be included. UREC's indoor aquatics center will be used for basic instruction in the event of inclement weather. The remainder of the days will be spent on local rivers like the James and Shenandoah. Water sports camp includes one overnight camping trip on Thursday night. No prior experience is required. Strong swimming skills and comfort in the water are required.

  • Cost: $300/week

    • High Adventure Day Camp (Rock Climbing and Water Sports Camps): $300/week
  • Register at URECregister.jmu.edu under Youth Programs or click the correct registration button below.
    • If you are a JMU faculty/staff/student, your login is your JMU E-ID and JMU password.
    • If you are not a JMU affiliate, please create a guest account!
  • Please note that you will need to add a dependent to your account before registering your child for youth programs. 
    • If you are already logged in, click on your e-id name link on the top right of the URECregister.jmu.edu page.
    • If you are not logged in, click here.
    • You will be directed to the “VIEW ACCOUNT” page.
    • Scroll to the bottom and click “ADD A DEPENDENT.”
    • Once this is complete, you will be able to register your child.
    • Once your registration is complete, you will recieve a confirmation email.

Additional Camp Information

  • By registering your child, you are giving permission for your child to visit locations on and off-campus with Camp UREC.
  • Camp Counselors are trained JMU student employees.
  • Lead Adventure Camp Counselors hold a Wilderness First Aid Certification.
  • UREC follows the American Camp Association's recommendations for ratios of adults to participants.
    • One staff member for every 5 campers ages 4 and 5
    • One staff member for every 6 campers ages 6 to 8
    • One staff member for every 10 campers ages 9 to 11
    • One staff member for every 15 campers ages 12 to 17
  • Campers will need to bring their own packed lunch. Drop off (8:30-9am) and pick up (4-4:30pm) are both at UREC. Please see the Camp Drop-off/Pick-up Map Route for location details.
  • Camp is open to both JMU and non-JMU affiliates.

Refund Policy

Refunds can be made up to six business days before the start of that camp week.
