Major Lanoue joined the James Madison University Police Department in 2011 as an Emergency Manager.  In 2016 he was promoted to Deputy Chief of Police and assigned as the Patrol Division Commander.

Prior to joining the JMU Police Dept. Major Lanoue served with the Harrisonburg Police Department rising to Division Command.  He has service in Patrol, Crime Prevention, Narcotics, Special Operations, Crime Scene Investigations to include graduation from the Virginia Forensic Science Academy, and SWAT.

He has a Master of Public Administration degree from James Madison University and a Bachelor of Science degree in Management from Eastern Mennonite University.

Major Lanoue is a veteran of the United States Marine Corps.

On July 3, 2019, Major Lanoue became the Interim Chief of Police for the James Madison University Police Department upon the retirement of Chief Lee Shifflett.
