Be the Change Profiles

Wesli Spencer ('06)
Former Student Government Association President

Immediate past SGA president Wesli Spencer continues to put his ideology "leadership through service" into action. Wesli addressed leaders, peers and participants at the 2006 National Association for the Advancement of Colored People convention, July 17 in Washington, D.C. He spoke about social issues facing his generation and about Hurricane Katrina relief efforts at the convention's Youth Night. At JMU, Wesli created a peer-mentor group to empower fellow students and to train minority leaders. Through behind-the-scenes work with groups like Students for Minority Outreach, he blazed his own path to leadership — through service.

"A title doesn't make you a leader or deserving of respect; it's who you are as a person and what you do with a position that makes all the difference." — Wesli Spencer in his keynote address at the 97th annual NAACP Convention in Washington, D.C.
