Nazz Aboutabl

Nahla "Nazz" Aboutabl is a Harrisonburg native and a soon-to-be-graduating graduate student in the public administration program here at JMU. She focuses mainly on youth development nonprofit work as well as research and hope to one day work in the juvenile restorative justice field. Nazz is happy to have been placed at the Institute for the Innovation in Health and Human Services as it is a department that she has become very passionate about in the last year. Their many community development and specifically youth development, programs really help Harrisonburg and create a lasting relationship with its community. Nazz will be working on creating a "Futuro Latino" inspired program for Arabic speaking students. She hopes that this program will last after the fellowship is over and that it continues to help the Arabic speaking community in Harrisonburg and the surrounding area.

The Position

Each month looks different for the IIHHS fellow. A major priority is contributing directly to IIHHS program services. This month Alex is simultaneously researching and contacting Court Appointed Special Advocates(CASA) agencies in Virginia for Blue Ridge CASA; editing the Training and Technical Assistance Centers(TTAC) website; managing a social media calendar for TTAC; creating media for the Poverty Simulation using Camtasia; meeting with Bluestone Communications client relations director to work on a style guide and facebook campaign; taping up and organizing the loading dock for Gus Bus; reviewing and reading resources for the Building Cultural Competency Workshop(BCCW); meeting with the leadership team at IIHHS to curate a community relations and faculty relations list; typing meeting minutes for the Healthy Community Council; and preparing for three presentations she will give in March. Alex usually works on 4-5 of these tasks per day. The 2019-2020 will continue these tasks, and will take on other tasks as needed.
