Maintaining Academic Excellence

The university's Academic Advising website maintains a comprehensive list of campus resources available to JMU students. Below are resources that we want to highlight for Pre-Professional Health students.

Academic Resources

You are always encouraged to utilize your professors and instructors for academic help in any course, and JMU has additional resources to assist you with academic skills, knowledge, and understanding. Academic resources should be utilized by all students that wants to do better than they are doing academically - even if it's to improve from a B to an A!

Learning Strategies Instruction (LSI). LSI provides individualized academic coaching designed to helps students improve their academic skills, such as time management, reading comprehension, study skills, notetaking, memorization, test taking, and more! LSI helps you learn how to learn better! Begin by scheduling an individual appointment with LSI. Please know, LSI is organizationally within the Office of Disability Services; however, these services are not exclusive to students registered with disabilities, and utilizing these services does not mean that you have a learning disability.

Science and Math Learning Center (SMLC; SSC 1100). The SMLC assists students in understanding of course content, homework assignments and lab reports found in 100 and 200-level courses in physics, chemistry, math, and statistics. No appointments are necessary and the services are free!

Peer Assisted Study Sessions (PASS). Some sections of biology, chemistry, and math are supported by PASS sessions, which are student-facilitated academic support programs designed to help you improve your performance in specific courses. PASS leaders have successfully completed the course with the same professor.

The SMLC and PASS are centers within Learning Centers at JMU. Others include the Communications Center, Digital Communication, English Language Learner Services, and the University Writing Center.

Wellness Resources

You are always encouraged to utilize your professors and instructors for academic help in any course, and JMU has additional resources to assist you with academic skills, knowledge, and understanding.

The Center also has two self-care spaces: The Oasis and The Studio. The Oasis provides a quiet, soothing space that gives you the opportunity to learn and practice a variety of relaxation, mindful, and meditative techniques. The Studio provides space to explore and engage in expressive arts.
